HSBC Appoints Arjan Van Den Berkmortel Regional President, Commercial Banking for the West Coast Region and Texas

NEW YORK--()--HSBC Bank USA, N.A. (HSBC) today announced the appointment of Arjan Van Den Berkmortel as an Executive Vice President and Regional President, Commercial Banking for the West Coast region and the State of Texas. He is based in Los Angeles and reports to Mark Watkinson, Senior Executive Vice President and Head of Commercial Banking for North America.

“Arjan’s demonstrated management skills, breadth of commercial banking knowledge and experience working with companies around the world where HSBC has a presence will allow us to further meet the needs of our many business clients in these important markets,” Watkinson said. “His appointment further demonstrates our commitment to our U.S. commercial banking business and its growth prospects.”

Van Den Berkmortel joined HSBC in 1996 and has held a number of high-profile positions within the organization in London, Hong Kong, Paris and the Middle East. He has extensive cross-border banking experience in trade finance, transaction and corporate banking. Most recently, he served as Chief Executive Officer for HSBC’s operations in the Czech Republic.

Van Den Berkmortel points to a recent HSBC international business survey that focused on the California market when considering the opportunity ahead for HSBC. The survey, released last summer, found that more than half (58 percent) of California businesses with annual sales ranging from US$20 million to US$5 billion had seen their international revenue grow faster than domestic revenues. HSBC expects this trend may continue going forward.

“The West Coast and Texas are dynamic and internationally connected markets, and are central to HSBC’s growth strategy in the U.S.,” Van Den Berkmortel said. “Our investment in these markets, combined with HSBC’s global presence, ideally positions us to bank, serve and assist companies with international operations or those wanting to explore new markets.”

Van Den Berkmortel is a graduate from the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands where he obtained a master’s degree in Economics and Business Administration. Additionally, he has completed a senior executive program at the London Business School.
