TÜV Rheinland Introduces New Consulting, Testing and Certification Services for Emerging Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure

Suzanne Murtha to Head New North American Intelligent Transportation Systems Group

BOSTON & ALEXANDRIA, Va.--()--TÜV Rheinland has announced Suzanne Murtha’s appointment as business development manager for its Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) group. In her new role, Murtha will develop and manage TÜV Rheinland’s North American consulting, assessment, analysis, verification, validation, testing and certification of ITS components and systems.

ITS encompasses a broad range of networked wireless and wire-line communications and information technologies. ITS is expected to give users and managing agencies real-time and accurate vision of road-way status, improve safety and mobility, and enhance vehicle throughput.

“Heavy traffic and gridlock are commonplace the world-over,” said Murtha. “Intelligent toll systems, telematics and other technologies can minimize congestion and keep traffic flowing, offering significant economic and ecological rewards in return. It is our intention to help automotive manufacturers, government agencies, equipment producers, system integrators and others involved with intelligent transportation systems deliver these benefits.”

Specific examples of ITS include constant vehicle-to-vehicle communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications (sensors that detect movement and queues, tolling systems and the real-time capture and management of the data that comes from all of these sources), dynamic mobility applications, environmentally friendly traffic management, road weather applications and others.

A fifteen-year veteran of ITS, Murtha comes to TÜV Rheinland from Kapsch TrafficCom of Washington D.C., where she served as principal associate for government relations and business development. Previously, she had been the director of vehicle safety systems for ITS America, based in Washington D.C. She also has related experience with Strategy Analytics in Wellesley, Mass.; Providate Automotive in Ann Arbor, Mich.; Standard & Poors DRI in Lexington, Mass.; and PriceWaterhouse Coopers in West Chester, Penn. She earned a B.A. from Villanova University, and will be headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.

“Intelligent transportation systems represent an important step forward in global mobility,” said Sebastian Oertel, Director of Mobility for TÜV Rheinland. “We are proud of the role TÜV Rheinland expects to play as over-road transportation evolves, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have someone with Suzanne’s experience, capabilities and knowledge on our team.“
