Northern Trust served as headline sponsor for the inaugural Art for Africa™ auction which was held at Sotheby’s in London in September 2009.
“Northern Trust supports educational, social welfare and cultural institutions around the world through its philanthropic efforts and we are pleased to continue to support the Africa Foundation,” said Jeff Kauffman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Northern Trust’s Personal Financial Services business in the Northeastern United States and managing director in EMEA and APAC. "We are delighted to sponsor an event that will help better the lives of disadvantaged children in South and Eastern Africa through the powerful reach of contemporary art.”
The proceeds from the New York sale will benefit Africa Foundation’s mission of helping orphaned and vulnerable children living in some of the poorest rural communities in South and Eastern Africa. Africa Foundation funds and manages projects in education, health care, and income generation for communities in conservation areas in South Africa, with a specific focus on children orphaned and affected by HIV/AIDS.
Krista Krieger, Chair of the Board of Trustees of Africa Foundation (USA) says, “Africa Foundation has been hard at work for the past 20 years, partnering with communities to dramatically change the lives of women, children and families. Due to the incredible generosity of some of the leading contemporary artists of our time, Art for Africa is able to improve the lives of thousands of orphaned and vulnerable children. We are very grateful to all of the artists, galleries and sponsors who have enabled us to fulfil our mission.”
Philanthropy is an important component of corporate social responsibility at Northern Trust. In 2010, Northern Trust donated approximately $14 million to nonprofit organizations worldwide.
