Samsung Surpasses 60 Percent Share for Commanding Lead in 3D TV Market

NPD data confirms that consumers are voting with their wallets for the best 3D TV available

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--()--Samsung Electronics America Inc., a market leader and award-winning innovator in consumer electronics, today announced that it has surpassed the 60 percent market share threshold to establish a commanding lead in the U.S. 3D TV market, according to newly released revenue and unit sell-through data from market research company The NPD Group.

Specifically, for the time period May 22-June 18, 2011, Samsung has a unit and dollar share of 61% in the 3D TV market, which includes both LED and Plasma 3D TVs. In addition, according to NPD’s Retail Tracking Service, Samsung has over 50% unit and dollar market share for April to May, 2011.

“Clearly consumers are voting with their wallets and choosing the TV that provides a superior 3D experience,” said John Revie, senior vice president of Home Entertainment, Samsung Electronics America, Inc. “Samsung 3D TVs can deliver Full HD 3D, but a TV isn’t just about 3D. We also are leaders in design with our gorgeous TVs, and leaders in connected TV with our hugely popular Samsung Apps platform. Consumers don’t need to compromise when they choose a Samsung TV.”

Content creators agree that the Full HD experience available on Samsung TVs is a great way to enjoy 3D at home.

“Quality is what matters when it comes to 3D,” said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg. “DreamWorks Animation has always been dedicated to creating movies of the highest quality and, since 2009, we have been the only studio to exclusively produce films in 3D," Katzenberg continued. "So, it is tremendously important to us that 3D in the home must also be of the highest quality. Samsung’s active 3D TVs offer the best in-home 3D viewing experience. Their full-resolution 3D TVs deliver to the home the same immersive 3D experience that our filmmakers intended for our audiences.”

However, delivering this amazing 3D experience to the whole family doesn’t need to be expensive. Consumers purchasing qualified 2011 3D TVs from participating authorized retailers will receive two pairs of 3D Active glasses (model SSG-3100GB) free of cost, directly from the retailer.*

Samsung also has lowered prices on its complete line of glasses as of May 1 – battery operated 3D Active glasses are now just $49.99.

Samsung’s 3D Active technology delivers a no-compromise 3D experience. Unlike other approaches to 3D, Active 3D Technology delivers up to double the resolution for an immersive, Full HD image (1080p picture for each eye), a wider viewing angle and no black lines interfering with the picture.

*The glasses promotion is offered only by participating authorized Samsung retailers at their discretion. Samsung may choose to exclude certain models from the promotion due to supply or other constraints. Samsung advises consumers to verify that a particular retailer is participating in the promotion and that a particular TV is eligible before completing a purchase. Glasses will be provided by the retailer as part of a 3D Starter Kit with select models.
