2011 BIO International Convention

WASHINGTON--()--The 2011 BIO International Convention, the world’s largest biotechnology event wraps up today at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Hosted by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, the 2011 BIO International Convention’s last day spotlights advancements in biosecurity and personalized medicine. More than 15,000 attendees from 48 states and 65 countries came to Washington, D.C., for the Convention, which brings together individuals from industry, academia and government.

Highlights from Today’s Program Include:

  • 2011 Biosecurity Conference
    This session will focus on the evolving interrelationship with Obama administration officials, security experts and industry innovators. (8:15 am – 5:15 pm)
  • Personalized Medicine and Companion Diagnostics: The Changing Biopharma Industry Landscape
    This session will examine the current makeup of personalized medicine; discuss collaborative initiatives and interact with leading sector companies focusing on advancing personalized medicine initiatives. (8:30 am – 9:45 am)
  • Manufacturing of Biologics and Drugs: Safer, Faster, Cheaper: Changing Process Paradigms, Platforms and Products in Biomanufacturing
    This session will describe the paradigm shift from handcrafted to mature process technologies in biomanufacturing; how the FDA’s initiatives have sped the adoption of process methods since 1997; and demonstrate how the process controls enable fast, cheaper and safer biologics. (8:30 am – 9:45 am)
  • Keynote Address: The Role of BWC in a Biotech-Driven World
    Featured Speaker: Paul van den Ijssel, president of the 2011 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) Review Conference. This address will focus on the goals and objectives of the upcoming BWC Review Conference, and how its valuable convening function can best be used to enhance global biosecurity in light of new advances in the life sciences, such as synthetic biology, nanotechnology, and other convergent technologies. (1:30 pm – 2:00 pm)
