Research and Markets: An Israel Defence and Security Report for Q3 2011 - The Recent Growth of the Economy Leads to Growing Spending on Defence

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/1293ce/israel_defence_and) has announced the addition of the "Israel Defence and Security Report Q3 2011" report to their offering.

Since the cessation of Operation Cast Lead in January 2009, the number of rockets fired into southern Israel from Gaza has been largely reduced from the levels of 2007 and 2008. However, March 2011 saw a sharp increase in rocket and mortar fire, and tension is arguably higher now than at any point since Operation Cast Lead.

Sporadic violence continues across the West Bank. The murder of five settlers on March 11, coming amid an increase in anti-Palestinian activism by settler groups in the Nablus region and the March 23 bombing of a bus-stop in Jerusalem that killed a British woman were the most notable incidents. The uncertainty of Israel's strategic position against the backdrop of widespread unrest in the broader Middle East, particularly in Syria and Egypt, probably led to a more measured response than normal to such incidents.

Political Outlook:

Uncertainty about Egypt's future political orientation following the upheaval that began in January 2011 is a serious concern for Israel. Egypt's next rulers could adopt a more pro-Palestinian position, thereby emboldening the Palestinians in their relations with Israel.

Economic Outlook:

The Israeli economy is set to continue expanding at a healthy rate on the back of higher consumer confidence and a more supportive external environment. The report forecasts real GDP growth of 3.8% and 3.4% in 2011 and 2012 respectively, though it cautions that appreciatory pressures on the shekel pose downside risks to growth forecasts.

Defense Industry:

Israel's defence industry is substantial. The scale of the industry means that the country has developed extensive technological advancement, such as counter-terrorism and surveillance products. This provides opportunities for custom elsewhere, such as Turkey and India, both of which have significant requirements. Israel is now India's second largest defence supplier.

Israel is also an importer of larger items such as surface ships and warplanes. The recent growth of the economy has meant that absolute spending on defence has continued to grow - even though it has fallen to below 6% of GDP.
