Artesian Water Recycling Partnership Receives Government Award

NEWARK, Del.--()--Artesian Water Company, the principal subsidiary of Artesian Resources Corporation, in partnership with the Town of Middletown (DE), the office of Governor Jack Markell, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, the Delaware Department of Agriculture, the University of Delaware and area farmers Dennis Clay and Lawrence Jester, have received the 2011 Government Award from the Water Resources Association of the Delaware River Basin (WRADRB). At WRADRB’s annual Recognition Dinner on April 20, Artesian and its partners were recognized for encouraging and supporting the use of reclaimed municipal wastewater for agricultural irrigation and groundwater recharge.

The innovative partnership effort has enabled the area farmers to irrigate their fields with reclaimed water from Middletown instead of using pumped ground water. So far, more than 76 million gallons of water have been saved, and the effort has the capacity to save up to 3 million gallons of water a day.

“The partnership was a result of the commitment of each organization to preserving our invaluable water resources, and we are honored that it has been recognized by the WRADRB,” said Artesian President and CEO Dian C. Taylor. “We expect this is the first of many water recycling projects we will participate in on the Delmarva Peninsula, and we look forward to continuing to work with local government and business in helping to promote sensible water conservation.”
