Community LINC Opens Wellness Clinic with Funds from Humana

Health and benefits company now accepting applications for this year’s $100,000 grant

KANSAS CITY, Mo.--()--Local non-profit Community LINC used a 2010 $100,000 grant from Humana to add an on-site wellness clinic to its facilities for homeless families. Today, Humana begins accepting applications for this year’s grant through its web site – Humana.com/HCB.

Community LINC’s clinic has evaluated 45 children since opening in March. During the visits, volunteer doctors and nurses collected family, medical and social histories; recorded blood pressure, height, weight and body mass indexes; and assessed motor, social and language development. The data will be kept in electronic medical records for each child.

“Homeless families struggle to have their kids seen by the same doctor,” said Dr. Raymond Cattaneo, MD, a volunteer in Community LINC’s infant and toddler center and medical director for the new clinic. “Many parents use the emergency room for basic illnesses, which dramatically increases the cost of medical care. In our first month, we prevented at least one ER visit and addressed several other medical issues, including asthma, eczema and obesity.”

In addition to the wellness clinic, Community LINC is using the funds from Humana to renovate an indoor exercise space, install new flooring, complete the outdoor playground and pay for a part-time academic coordinator.

As Community LINC continues its transformation, Humana is looking for the next recipient of its $100,000 grant. The grant program – aptly named Humana Communities Benefit – has invested $600,000 in local health initiatives over the past five years. Applications are available at Humana.com/HCB and are due by June 24, 2011.

“We’re searching again for organizations that share Humana’s broad view of well-being. As a company, we know well-being begins when we’re children and extends through our adulthood. It involves much more than just our physical health, equally important are a person’s sense of security, community and purpose,” said Jeremy Gaskill, president of Humana of Kansas and Missouri and chairperson of the 2011 grant program.

Humana Communities Benefit is open to 501(c)(3) organizations located in the Kansas City metropolitan area and working in the following areas:

  • Childhood health and education – Projects or initiatives that seek to improve health and academic achievement of children through the educational landscape.
  • Family wellness and active lifestyles – Projects or initiatives that strengthen the health of families through physical, social, mental, emotional, or environmental support.
  • Health literacy for diverse populations and seniors – Projects or initiatives dedicated to improving people’s ability to access, understand, and use health information, especially low-income populations, and seniors.

A panel of local judges, comprised of community leaders, public officials and business representatives, will work with Humana to select the $100,000 honoree. Finalists must make a formal presentation before the panel of judges. The local Humana Communities Benefit winner will be announced at a celebratory event in September.
