LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The 2011 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, sponsored by the Society for Science and the Public, will take place in Downtown Los Angeles May 8-13. The four-day gathering is expected to have a citywide economic impact of $11.6 million with nearly 13,000 total hotel room nights during the four-day event.
Recognized as the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, the Intel ISEF provides a forum for more than 1,500 high school students, grades 9-12, representing 50 countries with the opportunity to showcase their independent research.
“We are so pleased to be hosting this event in Los Angeles for the first time,” said Mark Liberman, president and CEO of LA INC. The Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau. “These bright young people are the future innovators and inventors of the world, and Los Angeles has so many opportunities for those seeking careers in the fields of science and engineering.”
The students attending this year’s Intel ISEF are the winners of their local and school-sponsored science fairs who went on to compete in Intel-ISEF-affiliated regional and state fairs, where the best participants earned the opportunity to attend the Intel ISEF. In addition, these high school students will be able to compete for nearly $4 million in prizes and scholarships while attending the conference in Los Angeles.
The fair and programming will take place at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the Intel programming held at the JW Marriott Los Angeles at LA Live. Social events include an off-site party at LA Live and an evening at Universal Studios Hollywood.
"In support of ongoing and much needed advancements in scientific and engineering research, developments and education, the Los Angeles Convention Center is proud to host the 2011 Intel International Science & Engineering Fair," said Pouria Abbassi, General Manager and CEO of LACC. "We look forward to this opportunity in representing the best of Los Angeles."
Because of the extensive lodging requirements, several Downtown LA hotels will host the attendees, including Figueroa Hotel, Hilton Checkers, JW Marriott Los Angeles at LA Live, LUXE City Center Hotel, Marriott Los Angeles Downtown, the Millennium Biltmore, Ritz-Milner Hotel, Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown, Standard Hotel Downtown Los Angeles, the Westin Bonaventure Hotel and Suites, and the Wilshire Grand Los Angeles.
