International Fusion Energy Research Center Selects SGI to Support Petaflop Supercomputer

Rokkasho, Japan Facility to be Among World’s Most Powerful Systems

FREMONT, Calif.--()--SGI (NASDAQ:SGI), a trusted leader in technical computing, today announced that it has been selected to provide services and select products in support for a new 1.3 petaflop high performance computing (HPC) system being installed at the International Fusion Energy Research Center (IFERC) in Rokkasho, Japan.

Available to European and Japanese researchers for a period of five years beginning in January 2012, this supercomputer is intended to allow the most advanced modelling and simulation in the field of plasmas and controlled fusion equipment. SGI will install, maintain and operate the supercomputer as well as provide additional key technologies for five years. The installation of the supercomputer in Rokkasho will begin in June of 2011.

"SGI is delighted to work with IFERC as they continue their industry-leading plasmas and controlled fusion research,” said SGI CEO Mark J. Barrenechea. "Our expert services and key technologies will provide European and Japanese researchers both global access and high availability of this new supercomputer.”

The IFERC supercomputer is designed to be operational 24 hours per day. Its peak performance of nearly 1.3 petaflops places it among the most powerful computers in the world.
