RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics has been named 2011 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year in the Product Manufacturing Category by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). By offering more than 900 ENERGY STAR-qualified models across multiple product categories, including more televisions than all other consumer electronics brands, Samsung was selected out of the 20,000 participating ENERGY STAR organizations for its outstanding contributions in ongoing employee, retailer, and distributor training programs, as well as consumer education campaigns, recycling efforts, and labeling practices.
“Samsung is honored to be selected as ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year as this prestigious award underscores our corporate commitment to sustainability,” said Yangkyu (Y.K.) Kim, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics America. “Under our global Planet First Initiative, we are working to manage our operations sustainably while we develop not only the most innovative technology, but also the most energy efficient products. The six Eco-Design and Sustainability Awards we received from the Consumer Electronics Association earlier this year, together with this strong recognition from the EPA is appreciated as validation of the hard work and dedication of Samsung people around the world.”
Building on its multi-year partnership with the EPA, Samsung actively promoted “Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR.” The company encouraged consumers to pledge small, yet important, steps to fight global climate change at Samsung events including the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the World Cyber Games, and at Boys & Girls Club of America events. Thus far, nearly 3 million Americans have signed up for the national ENERGY STAR movement and reduced more than 8,842,303,899 lbs. of greenhouse gas emissions.
“Today, the EPA is recognizing Samsung for their leadership in addressing climate change through energy efficiency,” said Elizabeth Craig, Acting Director of EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs. “Samsung is producing and promoting energy-efficient ENERGY STAR products that help American consumers join in the effort to increase our nation’s energy efficiency and reduce our emissions of greenhouse gases.”
This year alone, Americans prevented 170 million metric tons of GHG emissions with the help of ENERGY STAR—equivalent to the annual emissions from 34 million vehicles—and saved $18 billion on their utility bills.
A proud ENERGY STAR partner since 1996, 2011 is the third consecutive year Samsung has been honored for providing its customers with energy-efficient products that not only have reduced consumption by more than 1.2 billion kilowatts hours of energy, but also have helped consumers save on their energy costs.
Samsung will formally accept the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year recognition at the upcoming award ceremony on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 in Washington, DC. For more information about Samsung’s sustainability efforts, visit www.samsung.com/green.

Today, the ENERGY STAR label can be found on more than 60 kinds of products as well as new homes and buildings. Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $18 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas equivalent to those of 34 million cars.
