ONTARIO, Caliif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Newly retired Associate California Supreme Court Justice Carlos R. Moreno, whose support for same-sex marriage has been applauded by civil rights groups, will address the changing dynamics of family as part of a weeklong lecture series celebrating the dedication of the Ann & Steve Morgan Auditorium at the University of La Verne.
Justice Moreno’s presentation, “The Evolution of Family in California,” is being hosted by the University of La Verne College of Law. The presentation is free, but seating is limited.

Justice Moreno, who retired at the end of February, was on President Barack Obama’s short list of candidates for a U.S. Supreme Court opening in 2009, which was filled by Elena Kagen. He was sworn in as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California in 2001, following his nomination by Gov. Gray Davis. Prior to that, he was nominated by President Bill Clinton and confirmed in 1998 to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, where he served for three years. He began his career as a Deputy City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles and served on the Municipal Court, as well as the Los Angeles County Superior Court.
He cast the lone dissenting vote in the California Supreme Court’s 2009 decision to uphold Prop. 8, saying that the majority opinion “weakens the status of our state Constitution as a bulwark of fundamental rights for minorities protected from the will of the majority.” In 2010, he was the only justice to vote against the Court’s decision to uphold Prop. 209, a law banning affirmative action in government.
