Northern Trust Helps Institutional Clients Navigate Dodd-Frank Act’s Impact on Derivatives

Webinar taps legal and accounting expertise to assess regulation

CHICAGO--()--As part of its commitment to helping institutional clients navigate the changing regulatory landscape, Northern Trust hosted a webinar this month exploring the Dodd-Frank Act and its implications for the use of derivatives. Northern Trust had approximately 100 registered participants for the webinar, demonstrating the strong interest this topic has generated among institutional investors.

Webinar panelists Joseph Palumbo, a partner with Ernst & Young, LLP, and Andrea Kramer, a partner with McDermott Will & Emery LLP, reviewed how central clearing of derivatives will evolve in the new regulatory environment and how these changes will impact buy-side institutions, specifically U.S. public and private pension funds, as well as corporate treasury desks. Topics that were addressed during the webinar included:

  • The Dodd-Frank Act’s new regulations regarding central clearing of swaps, registration with the regulators, and reporting of both bilateral and cleared swaps
  • The rulemaking process, including advance notice of rulemaking by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the applicable comment periods
  • How to determine whether an investor is an end-user, major swap participant or dealer and why it is important
  • What these classifications mean for pension fund managers
  • Other issues Corporate ERISA pension plans and corporate treasurers need to consider, including the treatment of specific derivatives such as FX forwards and swaps

“Dodd-Frank is major regulatory reform that affects nearly every corner of the financial world, including the operation of derivatives markets,” said Judson Baker, derivatives product manager at Northern Trust and host of the February 9 event. “As a consultative service provider, we want to help our clients wade through the issues to reach the details that are most important to them.”
