Mergers & Acquisitions Increase in Oil and Gas Industry in 2010

M&As, which include change in ownership and control of companies (the authors does not consider this value as a new investment in the market), recorded an increase in deal value from $144.5 billion in 2009 to $176.5 billion in 2010. Q4 2010 was particularly one of the best quarters in terms of deal value, with $62.2 billion. However, the number of deals registered a marginal decrease from 500 deals in 2009 to 483 deals in 2010. The number of deals in each quarter had only a marginal difference with 121, 117, 125 and 120 deals in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4 2010 respectively.

Of the total, the M&A activity was driven largely by deals with value of greater than $500 million, reporting 67 deals worth $154.9 billion in 2010, representing 88% in terms of deal value.

The average deal value in the oil and gas industry registered an increase from $480 million in 2009 to $554.9 million in 2010. Additionally, the average median deal value increased from $37.4 million in 2009 to $58.8 million in 2010. South and Central America, in particular, registered a huge increase in average deal value from a mere $174.1 million in 2009 to $1.1 billion in 2010, owing to high value M&A activity in the region.

The M&A activity in the Oil & Gas industry will continue to increase in the coming months driven by above $85 crude oil price and stable financial markets. Restructuring by major oil and gas companies to focus on core projects and aggressive spending by Asian national oil companies especially China and India will dominate the oil and gas M&A market in 2011. Frontier exploration areas in Africa like Ghana, Mozambique and Uganda will also attract investment by NOCs and international oil and gas companies.
