Truth in Fur Labeling: Councilmember Lindsey Horvath Pursuing West Hollywood Becoming First City to Implement New Federal Law on Animal Protection

WHAT:

As one of the West Coast’s premier shopping destinations for luxury fashion and known worldwide for its unprecedented commitment to animal welfare, the City of West Hollywood—led by Councilmember Lindsey Horvath—will become the first city in the United States to implement the new federal Truth in Fur Labeling Act. The West Hollywood City Council will review an item that Councilmember Horvath is bringing forth to locally support the new Truth in Fur Labeling Act at the regularly-scheduled City Council meeting on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 starting at 6:30 p.m. at West Hollywood Park Auditorium, 647 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

Signed by President Obama on December 18, 2010, the Truth in Fur Labeling Act takes effect on March 18 and closes a decades-old loophole that allowed most clothing trimmed with animal fur to be sold without a label if the value of the fur was $150 or less.

“There has been very little oversight,” said West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey Horvath. “Consumers often do not know if the fur is real or fake because it could have been mislabeled or not labeled at all. They also may be alarmed to learn that unlabeled or mislabeled fur might have come from domesticated cats or dogs, but labeled as faux fur, as The Humane Society of the United States and the Companion Animal Protection Society have revealed. Now, fur-trimmed clothes will have to be labeled truthfully and consistently so shoppers are better informed about what they are buying. The implementation plan I have brought forward is a proactive way to protect animals while helping our business community come into compliance with this law.”

“West Hollywood is home to The Avenues: Art, Fashion and Design District and therefore has many iconic clothing stores that will be impacted by this new law,” said Genevieve Morrill, CEO & President of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. “The Chamber is excited to be partnering with the City on this important initiative which is a more proactive way of assisting businesses and educating them, rather than hindering them. We applaud Councilmember Lindsey Horvath’s leadership in finding a more business-friendly approach to this important issue,” she continued.
