Research and Markets: With The Unprecedented Number Of 20 Vendor Acquisitions In 2010, The Global IPTV Industry Is Poised For Even Larger Growth

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/46f72b/iptv_market_leader) has announced the addition of the "IPTV Market Leaders Report 2010 Edition 2" report to their offering.

This new MLR tracks the top 120 IPTV Vendors in 24 sub-sectors that are leading the IPTV market globally and in four global regions based on their deployments in 875 IPTV Service Providers (SPs) worldwide. The report ranks and evaluates the position of Vendors that provide IPTV Access Systems, Video Headends (VHEs), Video-on-Demand (VOD) servers, Set-top Boxes (STBs), Middleware (MW), and Content Protection/Digital Rights Management (CP/DRM).

Larger IPTV Vendors are building a full IPTV ecosystem so they can continue to work with large Telcos around the world. For example, Motorola recently acquired a CP/DRM (Content Protection) Vendor (SecureMedia) and a VOD Vendor (BitBand), and now appears in all six IPTV product segments. Pace recently acquired Latens and will soon participate in the CP/DRM segment.

While this trend continues for larger Vendors, some smaller Vendors continue to serve small IPTV Operators, often in their own region of the world. In the Middleware and Set-top Box segments, for example, some small Vendors serve just a few regions, and sometimes just a specific country. Other small Vendors, such as Verimatrix, have successfully built partnerships in all regions with larger Vendors, helping to maintain their global category leadership.

This report includes added Vendor-ranking profiles for all Vendors ranked within the top 10 in all regional sectors (compared to the top 5 in the past). Also, up/down arrows are added alongside the Vendor rankings, making it easier to understand how each Vendor is faring compared with the last MLR (see sample above).

Asia and the ROW regions have seen the biggest changes in rankings, with Huawei and ZTE making the biggest gains, mostly due to their growth in China; and to their growth in the VOD and Middleware sectors.

In addition, this report tracks the growth prospects for each company (see sample above). This is accomplished by tracking how many large IPTV service deployments the company is part of. For every vendor, tables are included that count the vendors significant IPTV deployments, both globally and within each region. A Service Provider is identified as a significant deployment if it is currently among the top 25 IPTV Operators in terms of total IPTV subscribers. A list of the top 25 IPTV Operators can be found in Table 1-2 of the report.

Definitions

This report defines IPTV as the delivery of video (broadcast or Video-on-Demand) via Internet Protocol (IP) to a Set-top Box over a managed network. This managed network is either copper (DSL), fiber (FTTx) or a combination of both. Typically, most deployments are by Telcos, Internet Service Providers or other Broadband Operators.

This report excludes best-effort or over-the-top (OTT) video services that are delivered over the public, unmanaged Internet.

This report also excludes hospitality and hotel services, which are covered in a separate report.

The IPTV Market Leaders Report is a must-have for IPTV Vendors and Service Providers needing updated navigation and market positioning tools for challenging economic times.

Methodology

This MLR report is part of the IPTV Tracking Service offered by the Multimedia Research Group, Inc. At the core of the data is the number of IPTV subscribers for each Service Provider. A combination of primary and secondary research methods are used to gather data for this report, including official company press releases and briefings with IPTV Operators and vendors. In-depth primary research is conducted by surveying IPTV vendors and verifying their customers and deployments around the world. Additionally, subscriber counts are verified by triangulating data from multiple vendors, using a top-down and bottom-up approach. Although many IPTV vendors are verified on any given IPTV deployment, there are still some IPTV vendors that have not been identified. Once data about each Providers subscriber numbers is gathered and verified, it is allocated to its vendors in each product segment. The data gathered is then separated into rankings for five of the IPTV product segments, within the four regions and globally.

The one exception is the Video Headend (encoder) segment, where market positions are based on the reported number of IPTV (Broadcast) channels provided (rather than subscribers) using each companys products.

The ratings in this IPTV Market Leaders Report (MLR) are based on a database of IPTV Service Providers that has been gathered over the past 8 years since 2002. As shown in Table 1-1, there are 875 total IPTV Service Providers in this database with 440 of them (50.3%) in North America. This is up from 853 total IPTV Service Providers since the Spring 2010 IPTV Market Leader Report in March 2010.

IPTV Market Leader Report Shows Steady Stream of New Entrants in Managed IPTV Market

Based on information from 875 IPTV Operators, where the total number of IPTV Operators have increased by 22 since Q2/2010, the rate of growth of global IPTV Operators continues at a rate of over 10 new Operators per quarter, with about 50% of those in North America.

With the unprecedented number of 20 Vendor acquisitions in 2010, the global IPTV industry is poised for even larger growth. Overall, there were 20 key IPTV Vendor acquisitions during 2010. The total value of the 10 reported financial transactions was US$1.95 billion reported. If the other 10 unreported deals were added, the overall value of the transactions would be well over US$2 billion. In 2011 Vendors and Service Providers also are starting to embrace Over-the-Top (OTT) video services, as well as other forms of online entertainment options in order to provide value to consumers.

Vendors released a variety of new cloud-based IP video solutions during 2010, which focuses on delivering OTT and managed IPTV entertainment mixed with linear TV and VOD. Clearly, IPTV Operators around the world are looking to better compete against the incumbent Pay-TV Operators through a variety of new IP-based services.

Globally, there were no changes to the Number 1 ranked IPTV Market Leaders Vendors in the six IPTV product segments covered. However, in Asia there were several changes to leaders as Service Providers in China and South Korea saw large subscriber growth in 2010. Many changes in ranks below Number 1 occurred regionally, all tracked in the report. Some smaller Telcos are looking at unmanaged OTT or hybrid OTT (including Digital Satellite or Digital Terrestrial plus OTT) to provide video services, says Jose Alvear, MRG IPTV Analyst. It is yet to be determined how widespread the move to OTT really is, and how much it impacts new Operator trials and strategies.
