NCKU Student Won 2011 iF Product Design Award

TAINAN, Taiwan--()--As iF Product Design Award announced its winners, student Ching Hua Lee from Department of Industrial Design at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, out of a total of 2,756 entries by 1,121 participants from 43 countries, has won the 2011 iF Product Design Award with his design of X-TUBE.

The iF Product Design Award, covering all areas of product design, serves as a platform for design-relevant innovations, thus recognizing today's globally networked world and its related dynamics, and since 1953, the iF Product Design Award has been recognized as a label for good design.

The iF International Forum Design, the Oscar in the design industry, organizing iF Product Design Award, iF Communication Design Award, iF Design Award China, iF Material Award, iF Packaging Award and iF Concept Award, is one of the indicating design competitions in design industry and business field, where Apple, Sony and Samsung are its regular participants.

Snakeboard, also named road surfboard, is a popular sport in recent years, applying the principle of human bodies twisting their waists, hips and legs and swinging their hands to drive the board forward.

Under the guidance of his supervising teacher, Ching-Hua Lee has designed a new style snakeboard which breaks the operation mode and structural design of past snakeboards that require integration of the two boards and the middle plastic material and only uses one piece of plastic plate to achieve its purpose.

Ching-Hua Lee expressed, “The use of snakeboards has been developed to meet the needs of special techniques. Traditional snakeboards often fail to satisfy the demands of users for special techniques, and the players may even face the risk of fracture. The design of X-TUBE has significantly elevated the product safety and stability.”

The award-winning X-TUBE, breaking the limitations of the snakeboards’ inner components, reducing the product cost and material use and increasing the possibilities of the product’s transformations, is intuitive and simple and is thus a great choice for those who love snakeboard sport.

The jury of the iF Product Design Award have selected their 993 favorites and the 50 iF gold award winners out of the 993 award winners will be announced on March 1st, 2011, and they will receive the golden iF sculpture designed by Herbert H. Schultes.
