Progressive Schools Accelerate Large-Scale IT Infrastructure Modernization With Wyse Cloud Client Computing

Wyse Continues Rapid Growth in Education Worldwide; Desktop Virtualization and Cloud Computing Trends Help Schools Cut IT Costs in Tough Economy

BETT 2011

SAN JOSE, Calif. & LONDON--()--Wyse Technology, the global leader in cloud client computing, today announced another group of successful customer implementations in the education sector. Wyse is currently demonstrating its solutions at BETT 2011, the world’s largest technology in education event. The event runs from January 12th to 15th 2011 in London, UK.

"We are proud to have so many education customers in the greater vicinity of this conference," according to David Angwin, Director of Marketing EMEA at Wyse Technology, "and the adoption of Wyse solutions in this industry over the past few years has truly been a global phenomenon. Schools and universities from Africa to Asia, Eastern and Western Europe, North and South America are all seeing the benefits of better computing performance without all the hidden costs of PC upkeep. The customers below are a good representative of this global trend."

The Priory Federation of Academies is one of the largest in England with four separate academies in Lincoln and Grantham. The federation has an ambitious programme to replace most PCs with Wyse thin clients to make teaching and learning with computers easier and more convenient. The programme has started with new classroom IT systems installed at Priory Witham Academy with an extremely positive response from the children, teachers and administrators.

As Antony Samson, assistant head teacher, Priory Witham Academy said: "Our goal is to get as close as possible to 100 percent Wyse thin clients because of the immediate benefits we’ve already seen in the classrooms and the school as a whole. The universal response from children and teachers is how much faster and responsive the thin clients are to use compared to the slow start-up time and inconsistent performance of the PCs. Wyse and their technology will be critical to how the schools in the Priory Federation intend to harness ICT to support great teaching and learning."

Hampton School, a British independent school for boys established over 450 years ago, is implementing an ambitious virtual desktop strategy that exploits the energy efficiency and zero management benefits of the latest Wyse Xenith next-generation zero clients.

Ian Trevena, Network Manager at Hampton School, said: "We're one of the UK's few carbon-neutral schools and so the low power rating and heat output of the Wyse Xenith zero clients is critical for us. With the first phase now live, there is a marked difference in how much cooler the classrooms have become, while the zero clients are so easy to support that our maintenance headaches with PCs are a thing of the past."

St. Anne School is a private Catholic School in Laguna Niguel, CA that serves over 800 children spanning preschool through the 8th grade. In order to mitigate ongoing PC maintenance and turnover issues, St. Anne recently began phasing out their PCs through a virtualization solution that leverages Citrix XenServer, Citrix XenDesktop, and a combination of Wyse Windows Embedded-based thin clients and Wyse Xenith next-generation zero clients.

"Teachers and students immediately noticed that they were able to log on to the centralized applications faster with the 'new computers' than they’d been able to do with the PCs," according to Joe Kemp, IT Manager at St. Anne School. "Login speed is particularly important in study periods or during classes, because faster logins enable teachers and students to get down to the material at hand more quickly. When teachers thank me for the new computers I just say, 'you're welcome.'"

New College Durham is a college in County Durham, England, serving both further education and higher education students.

George Wraith, head of systems at New College Durham said: "Migrating to virtual desktops with Wyse zero clients means our students and staff will enjoy a better end user experience even when using the most intensive multimedia applications and data. The feedback from the first users is extremely positive as they notice how much faster and more responsive the zero clients are. Ultimately the whole project will make greener, more cost-efficient computing integral to how the college provides a first class education."

Alvarado Elementary is a K-5 Spanish/English dual-immersion school based in San Francisco, CA. Through its PTA Technology Committee, Alvarado is rolling out Wyse E01 zero clients. Each classroom will be equipped with one PC and four student workstations in order to augment teacher curriculum.

"We have been working toward the goal of one-to-one computing, but purchasing a PC for each student was not only cost prohibitive but impossible for the school to maintain," according to Alvarado Elementary School PTA member Tom Rainey. "After trying other solutions, we selected Windows MultiPoint Server 2010 in conjunction with the E01 zero clients from Wyse. The combination gives us the economics and energy savings of shared computing, while also providing us with the assurance of working with two very sophisticated organizations."
