OLATHE, Kan.--()--Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, today announced an upgrade to the popular eTrex handheld line, eTrex 20x and 30x. These next-generation GPS handhelds retain the ease-of-use, durability and affordability of the original eTrex line, but add an all-new 2.2” sunlight readable high-resolution display and 3.7 GB of internal memory, which is more than twice the amount available in their predecessors. Rugged and water-resistant1, eTrex 20x and 30x boast a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with GLONASS support, a preloaded basemap and a variety of mounting options. Whether used on ATVs, bicycles, boats or as a handheld, eTrex 20x and 30x will keep users on the right path, or easily guide them back if they lose their way.

“We’re extremely excited to add new eTrex units to our handheld lineup,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “The eTrex units are the more accessible and easy-to-use units that Garmin offers, and we’re looking forward to bringing higher-end features like the vivid color display and expanded memory to this entry-level line of products.”

Boasting a 2.2”, 65K color, sunlight-readable, high-res display, eTrex 20x and 30x are built to endure rugged environments. The ergonomic design fits easily in users’ hands, and with an IPX7 water rating2, eTrex 20x and 30x can withstand the elements. With the built-in high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receivers with GLONASS support and HotFix satellite prediction, eTrex 20x and 30x can acquire a satellite fix quickly, and maintain it, even in heavy cover and deep canyons. These new units also maintain the intuitive user interface of the previous eTrex models, making them extremely easy-to-use.

Preloaded with a worldwide basemap, and equipped with 3.7 GB of internal memory, users can upload even more mapping or data to their eTrex through the microSD card slot. Both units will also support a variety of maps, including TOPO 24K, HuntView, BlueChart® g2, even City Navigator® with turn-by-turn navigation. In addition, eTrex 20x and 30x will also be compatible with BirdsEye Satellite Imagery (subscription required), so users will be able to download images to the device and integrate them into their maps.

The eTrex 30x adds a built-in 3-axis tilt-compensated electronic compass, which gives directional information even when standing still, without holding it level. Also added is a barometric altimeter to get more accurate altitude information, or to track barometric pressure over time to gauge changing weather conditions. Additionally, eTrex 30x can wirelessly share waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches with other compatible devices, including VIRB action cams, and accessory sensors like the Tempe™ temperature sensor, foot pod and heart rate monitor.

With a variety of profiles, eTrex 20x and 30x can be customized for each occasion or activity. Switching between configurations is a breeze, so when users get back to the car to drive home after a long day on the trail, they won’t miss a beat. Both eTrex 20x and 30x will also have a dedicated geocaching profile, which supports GPX files, so users can download cache information directly to the unit, without needing to manually enter coordinates or deal with paper printouts.

With a variety of mounting options, eTrex 20x and 30x are designed to be used on anything from ATVs, bicycles, boats and cars, or simply in the palm of a user’s hand. Boasting extended battery life, eTrex 20x and 30x run on two AA batteries, and can get up to 25 hours of use.

Available in summer 2015, eTrex 20x will have a suggested retail price of $199.99, and eTrex 30x will have a suggested retail price of $299.99.
